Trust our professional process
Cosmetically, people may choose rhinoplasty (also known as a nose job) to improve the appearance of their nose by altering its size, shape, or proportions. Medically, rhinoplasty can be performed to correct breathing problems related to the structure of the nose, such as a deviated septum, or to repair the nose after injury.
The procedure can involve modifications to the bone, cartilage, or skin of the nose, depending on the desired outcome.
The downtime for a rhinoplasty (nose job) can vary depending on the extent of the surgery and the individual’s healing process. I usually express that you will want to take at least 1 week off of work. If you develop black eyes during the surgery they will take two weeks to fade. It takes 1 month for the swelling to go down noticeably. Swelling continues to improve for 1 full year.¹
Recovery Timeline:
Immediate Recovery (1-2 Weeks)
Week One:
Most patients will experience swelling, bruising around the eyes, and discomfort. A nasal splint is often worn for the first week to support the new shape of the nose. Patients are usually advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities.
Week Two:
By the end of the second week, the swelling and bruising typically begin to subside significantly, and most patients feel comfortable returning to work or school, especially if they can avoid physical exertion.
Short-Term Recovery (3-4 Weeks)
After the first two weeks, noticeable swelling and bruising continue to decrease, but the nose may still be sensitive. Light exercise may be resumed, but patients should avoid any activity that could risk injury to the nose.
Long-Term Recovery (2-6 Months)
Swelling can persist, especially in the tip of the nose, for several months. It takes time for the final shape of the nose to fully emerge, and patients should avoid any activities that might cause trauma to the nose.
Final Result (6-12 Months)
The final results of rhinoplasty may not be fully apparent until a year after surgery. At this point, all swelling should have subsided, and the nose will have settled into its new shape.
Please Note:
Most people can return to their normal daily activities within 1-2 weeks, but full recovery takes longer. It is essential to follow the surgeon’s specific post-operative care instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
Post-Operative Care with Dr. Paige Bundrick
After your rhinoplasty procedure, Dr. Paige Bundrick will place a cast on the top of your nose, which will remain in place until your follow-up appointment for suture removal in 5 to 7 days. To promote healing, it is essential to rinse your nose generously with a saline nasal spray five times a day. Dr. Bundrick will provide you with a prescription ointment to apply to your sutures and inside your nose.
During your follow-up appointment, we will assess whether continued taping is necessary based on any remaining swelling after the cast and sutures are removed. Patience is key during your rhinoplasty recovery! To minimize swelling, it is advisable to sleep at a 30-degree angle and follow a low-salt diet. Our office will also supply you with arnica montana, bromelain, and a nutritional regimen designed to reduce swelling and enhance healing.
